van den Elsen, Wilhelmina[1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
-
Name van den Elsen, Wilhelmina Nickname Maria Birth 17 Jul 1814 Boekel, North Brabant, Netherlands
Gender Female Death Between 7 May 1848 and 11 May 1848 Buffalo, Erie County, New York, United States
- Wilhelmina Denissen *possibly" died between 7 May 1848 and 11 May 1848, according to father Adrianus Dominicus Godthardt's journal regarding the groups travels and locations (somewhere between Boston and Buffalo). Possibly Albany as that is close to Buffalo where Nicolaas was said to have stayed behind in.
*NOTE: What's curious is that father Godthardt mentions the families (though not by name) who stayed behind in Boston due to lack of money to continue on. He mentions some of the people he met and stayed with along the way. But he doesn't mention that Wilhelmina died on the trip. He does, however, mention that old Mother Gerrits died after they arrived in Little Chute. He later mentions that a baby of 10 months died (in Little Chute) and was buried in their new cemetery.
Her husband, Nicolaas, was one of the main organizers of the trip amongst the farmers. Why no mention of her death? Maybe she was too sick to continue with the main group at the time, but several days (or a week) later, she and her family continued on from Buffalo, only to die somewhere later on shortly after? Perhaps Mackinac, Michigan? Perhaps even Green Bay or somewhere in Brown County?
Green Bay Diocese - Email from Brother Steve Herro (Tuesday, August 8, 2023 3:17 PM) regarding inquiry to see if Wilhelmina might have died in the Green Bay/surrounding area:
I could not verify the death of Wilhelmina Denissen, 1848-1852, in Brown, Kewaunee, or Door Counties (Bay Settlement is in proximity to these county borders). The only church in that three county region that we hold death records for those years is St. John the Evangelist (Green Bay). The record was not there. I checked St. John Nepomucene (Little Chute, which is a distance from Bay Settlement, but was also Dutch; there was no evidence of Wilhelmina being buried from St. John Nepomucene).
Update (02.15.2025): Possible scenario to look into. Maybe Nicolaas didn't remarry until 1952 because Wilhelmina didn't die until then? Being an, apparently, devoute Catholic, he couldn't remarry unless his wife had died. So if she died in 1848, why did he wait 4 years to remarry...when he had children to take care of? Check records in Buffalo again, index here has a couple of possibilities: https://archive.org/details/Buffalo_NY_Death_Index_1852-1884/page/n400/mode/1up
