| 601 | The best, most credible documents found to give us an indication of John Sage's age and date of birth is his sworn intention to naturalize on 05 Apr 1859 in Prairie du Chien Wisconsin before the Crawford County Circuit Court. He stated he was 32 years old. This of course could mean he was 32 years and a day, or 32 years and a month old. It could also mean he simply rounded up from 31 years old and more than 6 months. The 1900 Federal Census in Prairie du Chien asked not their age at last birthday…but rather asked specifically for the month and year they were born. Sept of 1827 is what was given for him. He was no doubt retired at this time, so perhaps he was home when the census taker knocked on the door. He also probably wasn’t senile yet. So, if we use 05 Apr 1859 as a known starting point (his intention before the court to naturalize) and subtract 31 years and 7 months (i.e. almost 32 years old), we get Sept 1827, his likely birth month and year. Secondly, his registration as a Class II person subject to the Civil War draft gives his age as 36 as of 01 July 1863. As with his intent to naturalize document, we don't know if he rounded up a few months as it would be highly unlikely he was precisely 36 years old on that day. If we simply subtract just 36 years, this gives us 01 Jul 1827. If we subtract 35 years and 10 months, we get Sept 1827. | Sage, John (I383)

| 603 | The following Hartenbergh family (in many instances the name has been erroneously given in published records as Hardening, but the original records show Hartenbergh) has not been connected with the family of Gerrit Jansz Hardenbergh, the settler in Albany. It would seem, however, that they might belong to the same stock, possibly connected in the Fatherland. The name Gerrit also occurs in this family, although this may probably be traced to the wife of the progenitor, Grietie Gerrits. It is perhaps more than a coincidence that the Hoagland family, of which two members married into this family, came from Maarsenveen, a small village (159 inhabitants in 1632) next to Maar’ sen from where, as we have seen, Gerrit Jansz Hardenbergh hailed. The family is first met with in Jamaica, Long Island, and afterwards settled at Wolver Hollow, Oyster Bay, L. I. The ancestor of the family seems to be: 1. Johannes Hartenbergh, who was betrothed at Flatbush, Du. Ref. church, on June 3, 1693, to Grietie Gerrits. He is not listed among the freemen of Jamaica in 1688 and not mentioned by his last name, but perhaps hidden under a patronymic, in the published records of Jamaica. Among those subscribing to a fund for building a Dutch church at Jamaica in 1715 is --------- Hardenburg (Hist, of Queens Co. publ. in 1882 by Munsell Co.). | Hartenbergh, Major Johannes (I2077)

| 633 | Wilhelmina Denissen *possibly" died between 7 May 1848 and 11 May 1848, according to father Adrianus Dominicus Godthardt's journal regarding the groups travels and locations (somewhere between Boston and Buffalo). Possibly Albany as that is close to Buffalo where Nicolaas was said to have stayed behind in. *NOTE: What's curious is that father Godthardt mentions the families (though not by name) who stayed behind in Boston due to lack of money to continue on. He mentions some of the people he met and stayed with along the way. But he doesn't mention that Wilhelmina died on the trip. He does, however, mention that old Mother Gerrits died after they arrived in Little Chute. He later mentions that a baby of 10 months died (in Little Chute) and was buried in their new cemetery. Her husband, Nicolaas, was one of the main organizers of the trip amongst the farmers. Why no mention of her death? Maybe she was too sick to continue with the main group at the time, but several days (or a week) later, she and her family continued on from Buffalo, only to die somewhere later on shortly after? Perhaps Mackinac, Michigan? Perhaps even Green Bay or somewhere in Brown County? Green Bay Diocese - Email from Brother Steve Herro (Tuesday, August 8, 2023 3:17 PM) regarding inquiry to see if Wilhelmina might have died in the Green Bay/surrounding area: I could not verify the death of Wilhelmina Denissen, 1848-1852, in Brown, Kewaunee, or Door Counties (Bay Settlement is in proximity to these county borders). The only church in that three county region that we hold death records for those years is St. John the Evangelist (Green Bay). The record was not there. I checked St. John Nepomucene (Little Chute, which is a distance from Bay Settlement, but was also Dutch; there was no evidence of Wilhelmina being buried from St. John Nepomucene). Update (02.15.2025): Possible scenario to look into. Maybe Nicolaas didn't remarry until 1952 because Wilhelmina didn't die until then? Being an, apparently, devoute Catholic, he couldn't remarry unless his wife had died. So if she died in 1848, why did he wait 4 years to remarry...when he had children to take care of? Check records in Buffalo again, index here has a couple of possibilities: https://archive.org/details/Buffalo_NY_Death_Index_1852-1884/page/n400/mode/1up As of 20 March 2026 - There were 3 Catholic churches in service in Buffalo in May of 1848: (1) St. Louis church - I got the death records from this church from FamilySearch look up service. Negative search results for Maria. (2) St. Mary's church - Batavia Street, now Broadway. TO LOOK INTO (3) St. Patrick's Church - Broadway and Ellicott. | 634 | William Henry Wilson's Full Pension file from the National Archives containes the following: Jane's initial testimony of marriage (notary got the date wrong, later corrected). Pg.4 Jane states she can find no death record of William because one doesn't exist, however, she provides the affidavit of his regiment's commanding officer, Colonel George B. Bingham who identified Williams body in the hospital and went to his funeral. Pg. 10. Jane states that she doesn't have a copy of their marriage record because there wasn't one created. States where they were married (16th Street Baptist Church) and that Lavinia Hegeman was in attendence and that it was a quite wedding with no one else in attendence. Pg. 12. Jane sign's affidavit correcting the date of her marriage, which was June 16, 1851 (marriage location is the same). Pg. 14. [Pheobe] Amelia Storms (Wilson), Williams younger sister, signs affidavit that she has known Jane Wilson (Clark) for 30 years. Pg. 18. Amelia Storms states for the record that she was William's sister and that she knew him "during his natural life" and that she was agreeable to the marriage (interestingly, no mention of the parents). Pg. 20. Colonel George B. Bingham, the commanding officer of the Wisconsin 1st Infantry regiment, signed affidavit that he knew William well both before and during the war. He states some details about Williams death. He also states he was the one who identified Williams body at the hospital and attended his funeral in Nashville. Pg. 24. William’s oldest surviving sister, Lavinia Hegeman (Wilson) https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:271D-X4H?treeref=KH42-RP2 testified that she was present at William and Janes wedding in NYC. Pg. 26. On 14 Oct 1916, Jane states that she is 82 years old and was born on 18 Nov 1834 at New York City, N.Y. Pg. 43 | Family: Wilson, Capt. William Henry / Clark, Jane W (F109)

| 635 | Williams baptismal record from St. John the Baptist Catholic church in Smithon Illinois, gives the following information: His birth name was Paul Henry William Wittmann and he was born on "undecimo die decembris 1868" or on the 11th day of December. His death certificate and his 50th Wedding Anniversary announcement stated he was born on the 10th. This might possibly have been confused with his baptismal date which was on "Decimo die januarii" or the 10th day of January, 1869. He went by William Wittmann during his adult life. Grandma Ruth Rohleder wrote his name as 'Bill' on several family photos. | Wittmann, Paul Henry William (I366)
