    • The best, most credible documents found to give us an indication of John Sage's age and date of birth is his sworn intention to naturalize on 05 Apr 1859 in Prairie du Chien Wisconsin before the Crawford County Circuit Court. He stated he was 32 years old. This of course could mean he was 32 years and a day, or 32 years and a month old. It could also mean he simply rounded up from 31 years old and more than 6 months.

      The 1900 Federal Census in Prairie du Chien asked not their age at last birthday…but rather asked specifically for the month and year they were born.

      Sept of 1827 is what was given for him.

      He was no doubt retired at this time, so perhaps he was home when the census taker knocked on the door. He also probably wasn’t senile yet.

      So, if we use 05 Apr 1859 as a known starting point (his intention before the court to naturalize) and subtract 31 years and 7 months (i.e. almost 32 years old), we get Sept 1827, his likely birth month and year.

      Secondly, his registration as a Class II person subject to the Civil War draft gives his age as 36 as of 01 July 1863. As with his intent to naturalize document, we don't know if he rounded up a few months as it would be highly unlikely he was precisely 36 years old on that day. If we simply subtract just 36 years, this gives us 01 Jul 1827. If we subtract 35 years and 10 months, we get Sept 1827.

  • Notes 
    • John Sage had 14 children - 2 with his first wife Mary McCarthy and then 12 with his second wife Ellen Cronin. Six of his children with Ellen died age 7 or younger, including their last two children Elizabeth and Honora who were twins.

      His death record from Wauwatosa, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin states he was born on 16 Jun 1820. This is at odds with the early census of him estimating his year of birth as 1829/1830. It's also at odds with, most importantly, his sworn intention to naturalize on 05 Apr 1859 in Prairie du Chien, WI. He stated to the court he was 32 years old, as well as his Civil War draft registration which gave his age as 36 as of 01 Jul 1863, both putting his year of birth at circa 1827.

      The informant on the death record was a "records" person from the hospital named E. Reinheimer. Since the F.M. Schulz M.D. attended to John Sage from 21 Sep to 24 Oct 1910 (over a month) and he died of "Senility," its likely that John, in his feable state of mind and without any knowledgeable family member visting him, told either the Dr. or the records person E. Reinheimer he was born on 16 Jun 1820. As of 11 Apr 2023, there is no known source to support that DOB.
